Open Office: Microsoft = Desperate

Computerworld reports that is brushing off Microsoft’s allegations that open source software infringes on 235 MS patents. MS general counsel Brad Smith said the free popular Open Office suite infringes on 45 patents.

This is an extraordinary and desperate act. I think it will backfire. Microsoft’s using a shotgun against open source.

The only thing Open Office infringes upon is proprietary document formats. Microsoft sat back as nation after nation and state after state has embraced open document formats, and only reluctantly offered an open document format as government bodies passed laws requiring something they didn’t want to offer.

Note the new category. I’m still fairly OS-agnostic, but Microsoft has crossed a line I can’t (and won’t) respect.
